“Nepal Gets First Extraordinary Citizen”
KATHMANDU: For over three decades, Chanda Musalman had been an object of ridicule and ostracisation in conservative Nepal. Now, the 48-year-old has created history in the marginalised gay community’s struggle for equal rights by becoming the first to get citizenship as a transgender.
With Nepal’s new democratic government having begun a drive to give citizenship to thousands of people who had been excluded from voting rights and other opportunities, Chanda became the first recognised transgender citizen. Last week, a team of government officials went to Nepalgunj town in Banke district to issue citizenship certificates to people who meet the new criteria.
